International Partnership on Leadership
5th-6th March 2027

Finding Wisdom in the Tensions:

A both/and approach to strengthening culture, practice, and systems in inclusive international schools.

What are some ways schools move from a commitment to inclusion toward systems that make it sustainable in practice?

This two-day institute will bring international school leaders and educators together to recognize, embrace and plan for some of the persistent tensions involved in leading inclusive schools. Drawing on a new NFI and ISLES publication, participants will use case studies, polarity mapping, and practical leadership tools to examine their own context and identify meaningful next steps.

Participants will:

  • Explore what it takes for inclusion to become a whole-school system rather than a set of services;
  • Learn to recognize and navigate the some tensions involved in leading inclusive schools;
  • Apply practical tools for examining culture, structures, collaboration, and decision-making; and
  • Identify meaningful next steps for advancing inclusion in their own school
  • Leave feeling efficacious and more confident in embracing tensions that we can learn from.

Who should attend: We strongly recommend school teams with representation from a variety of roles to attend together.

  • Heads and deputy heads of school
  • Principals and division leaders
  • Directors and coordinators of student support, inclusion, EAL, learning support, counseling, and wellbeing
  • Teaching and learning leaders
  • Teacher leaders responsible for schoolwide change

NFI Conversation at Zurich International School

This past January, Zurich International School hosted a Next Frontier Inclusion Conversation titled Collaborative Data Practices for Inclusion: Enhancing Learner-Centered Decision Making in Adaptive Tiered Systems and we are leaving deeply grateful and energized by what unfolded.

The weekend was a powerful reminder of the importance of slowing down, listening deeply, and wrestling together with ideas that truly matter. Across perspectives, roles, and lived experiences, educators came together with a shared commitment to strengthening cultures of belonging and inclusion within their school communities.

There was real joy in the dialogue educators listening with intention, challenging assumptions with care, sharing practice openly, and learning alongside one another across contexts, cultures, and systems. The honest exchange of challenges, questions, reflections, and promising practices reinforced a core belief of our work: collaboration is essential to moving inclusive education forward.

Together, we explored how data—when used thoughtfully, collaboratively, and humanely—can:

  • strengthen adaptive, tiered systems of support
  • center dignity, belonging, and learner voice
  • drive inclusive, learner-centered decision making

This work reflects the heart of Next Frontier Inclusion and our mission to cultivate a global, interdependent network of schools committed to honoring learning diversity and building inclusive cultures that truly serve every learner.

Our deepest thanks to Zurich International School for graciously hosting the conversation and for your leadership, engagement, and sustained commitment to inclusion. And thank you to every participant who showed up with curiosity, courage, and care. These moments of connection are what sustain the work—moving us beyond intention and into meaningful, collective action.

We leave grounded, hopeful, and inspired by what we continue to build together. Read More about the event and what else we have been up to HERE

American School of Bombay

True inclusion isn’t just a concept - it’s an active, intentional framework.

Eight schools in six countries met on April 10-12, 2025 at the American School of Bombay. Through conversations, activities and reflections the participants were called to lead with empathy, use data meaningfully and collaborate with purpose. By centering student voice, honoring individual stories, and making data-driven decisions within tiered systems, we focused on creating environments where every learner feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

As educators, we are called to lead with empathy, use data meaningfully, and collaborate with purpose. Let’s keep building learner-centered systems rooted in equity, collaboration, and shared responsibility.

A special thank you to American School of Bombay for hosting our first conversation this year.

NFI Conversation at the American School of Dubai

In February 2024, NFI relaunched its signature NFI Conversation at the American School of Dubai, bringing together educators from 22 international schools across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The atmosphere was celebratory and energized, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing inclusion through capacity building.

Over 2.5 days, participants engaged in deep exploration of culture-building, system readiness, and the development of empathetic, inclusive practices. Sessions focused on the Towards Inclusion Protocol, problem-solving, and how tools like AI can support capacity-building efforts. A powerful highlight was hearing from ASD students who shared their lived experiences with inclusion.

There was a palpable sense of joy, gratitude, and resolve throughout the event—a recognition that while this work is challenging, collective efforts and intentional system design are key to fostering truly inclusive schools.

Andrew Bumgarner

Originally from North Carolina, I bring a slight drawl, a healthy dose of Southern hospitality, and a deep commitment to inclusive education wherever I go. With a special education and school leadership background, my career has been driven by one central belief: that thoughtfully integrated technology can transform learning for students with unique learner profiles.

I’ve led student support programs in the U.S., Thailand, China, Paraguay, Switzerland, and now Hong Kong, always with a collaborative mindset and a focus on meeting the needs of diverse learners. What excites me most is the growing potential of instructional technology to remove barriers, personalize instruction, and empower students to engage with content in ways that work for them.

I hold master’s degrees in School Administration (Western Carolina University) and Special Education (University of North Carolina at Charlotte), and am currently pursuing a Doctorate of Education in Instructional Technology at Appalachian State University. My research centers on how generative AI can enhance curriculum accessibility for all students.

Outside the classroom, I’m happiest on a trail run or spending time with my family, which keeps me grounded and energized for the work I love.
